As we move through November, we approach a critical moment for our Grade 9 students and schools: the “Quarter 2 Slide.” During this period, many students experience a drop in academic performance, particularly those in Grade 9, who struggle to maintain the momentum built in the first quarter.
Several factors contribute to this decline. The increasing complexity of coursework presents challenges for students adjusting to the demands of high school. Additionally, the end of athletic seasons, especially football, can have a significant impact. Athletics often provide academic motivation and support for student-athletes, and as these seasons wind down, students may lose some of their focus and drive. As they settle into the realities of ninth-grade expectations, many experience a drop in stamina and motivation.
To counter this trend, RISE Network schools remain committed to providing targeted support and using data-driven interventions. We aim to help students stay on track and continue progressing toward their academic goals. Past strategies include Freshman Academy Q2 support sessions and sending ‘good news’ letters and cards home to families for encouragement. By proactively addressing this challenge—reflected in a 5.4 percent dip in 2022-23 and a 7.6 percent dip in 2023-24—we are better positioned to equip educators and students with the tools and resources needed to stay on course.
